As turkey season here in Kansas draws to an end, we pay tribute to those of us hunters that go to the very end.  Thomas Allen is one of those people.  Some of you may know the story of how Thomas and I met, but for those of you who don't just watch some of his videos from this 2011 Kansas Turkey hunts and you will.  To put it short our beginning started with hostility, but as the story goes... we end our season as new friends.  Thomas had hunted in Kansas during the beginning of our archery season, but just like all of us turkey hunters have experienced, he was unable to fill one of his season tags. Even after the choice words we had expressed with each other.. I offered Thomas my lending hand, and to my suprise he excepted.  After a few emails back and forth, Thomas and I made an agreement for me to guide him on a personal turkey hunt and film for him.  I was extremely excited about this opportunity, but weary due to the scheduled dates of the hunt.

Kansas Hunting Outfitters and Guides Deer Facts

Kansas is an excellent state for both whitetail and mule deer hunting. Kansas has introduced some of the best trophy whitetail deer hunting in the nation. I distinctly remember my first experience with hunting Kansas Whitetail Deer. Having been raised in the serene woodlots of Northern Missouri, standard procedure was to locate big tracts of white oak timber funneling down and leading to healthy agricultural row crop fields, along some spooky riverbottom. Often times in periods of early season as a Missouri hunter I would even dedicate myself to hunting white oak orchards exclusively. The hunting of white oak orchards occurs successfully when the hunter scouts out a big track of white oak timber, following which the hunter will locate several mature trees that are producing fallen acorns or mast. The hunter should dedicate him or herself to hunting only mature oaks bearing acorns that are holding numerous big rubs under the shadows of their majestic branches. Kansas whitetail deer hunting ranks as the #6 State in the Nation with Boone and Crockett and Pope and Young Record Books for most number of entries. Only the States of Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Ohio, and Minnesota proceed it surrounding gross number of entries in the record books. Two of out of the top 10 bucks ever recorded in the Boone and Crockett Record Books are from Kansas. Remember that to qualify for the Boone and Crockett Record Books a whitetail buck must score over 17 inches of net antler to be displayed in the typical category. Nontypical whitetail bucks need be a minimum of 190 inches. Boone and Crockett recognizes rifle, shotgun, archery, and muzzleloader means of harvest. To qualify for Pope and Young Record Books, a white tail buck must score a minimum net of 125 inches of antler for typical animals, and 155 for non typical white tailed bucks. 7 of the top 20 deer recorded in the Pope and Young Record Books are taken from Kansas. Further 60% of all non typical whitetail entries from Pope and Young of the top 20 non typicals ever harvested are from Kansas. Kansas is definitely the location to pursue trophy non typical whitetail bucks. Of course non typical characteristics must be a hereditary trait of the Kansas whitetail herd.

Kansas Hunting Outfitters and Guides Pheasant Facts

Most hunters know Western Kansas as a pheasant hunter's paradise. Although not native, the ring-necked pheasant has become a fixture to much of the Kansas landscape. This variety and abundance of opportunities has made Kansas one of the more popular destinations among pheasant hunters worldwide. All pheasant populations fluctuate annually according to weather and habitat conditions. Pheasant are birds that can be found alone or in small flocks. Typically, a mother hen and her flock will stay together until early autumn. While pheasants are able to fly fast for short distances, they prefer to run. If startled however, they will burst to the sky in a "flush." Their flight speed is 27 to 38 mph when cruising but when chased they can fly up to 60 mph. Pheasant spend almost their entire life on the ground, rarely ever being seen in trees. They eat a wide variety of foods; including, insects, seeds and leaves. Roosters typically have a harem of several females during spring mating season. Hen pheasant nest on the ground, producing a clutch of around ten eggs over a two to three week period in April to June. The incubation period is about 23–26 days. Pheasant will range in weight from 3.5 to 4 lbs, Hens will range in weight from 2 to 2.5 lbs. The insulating effect of habitat moderates windchills, thus providing a warmer and less energy-demanding microclimate for pheasant. Birds, like dogs and cows, do not sweat to air-condition their body, they must pant (rapid inhaling and exhaling) to remove excess body heat Through most of the growing season, pheasant can survive on the moisture they consume in insects and the morning dew on vegetation. Male pheasants are called 'Roosters' or 'Cocks' and females are called 'Hens' A typical rooster accumulates a harem of three to seven hens. After hatching, pheasant chicks immediately begin growing flight feathers, and are capable of short flights at 2 weeks Pheasant do not migrate, they stay relatively local all year long. On flat ground, a ringneck pheasant can run at speeds of 8-10mph, Pheasant can fly up to 48mph.

Kansas Hunting Outfitters and Guides Turkey Facts

Wild turkey were reintroduced into Kansas in the 1960s, and the program has been a great success. Today, huntable populations of turkey exist in nearly every county. The Rio Grande subspecies dominates the western two-thirds of the state. Low numbers in the southwest provide only limited hunting. Hybrid Rio Grande/Eastern turkey are found in the northcentral region. The Eastern subspecies is common in the northeast and far southeast regions, where numbers have grown tremendously in recent years. Estimated wild turkey population in Kansas is 300,000 birds. That's a nice number! The dates supplied may be outdated by the time you read this, but it'll give you some idea of what to expect for the upcoming season(s). Wild turkey have excellent vision during the day but don't see as well at night. They are also very mobile. Turkey can run at speeds up to 25 mph, and they can fly up to 55 mph. When mating season arrives, anywhere from February to April, courtship usually begins while turkeys are still flocked together in wintering areas. After mating, the hens begin searching for a nest site and laying eggs. In most areas, nests can be found in a shallow dirt depression, surrounded by moderately woody vegetation that conceals the nest. Hens lay a clutch of 10 to 12 eggs during a two-week period, usually laying one egg per day. She will incubate her eggs for about 28 days, occasionally turning and rearranging them until they are ready to hatch. A newly-hatched flock must be ready to leave the nest within 12 to 24 hours to feed. Poults eat insects, berries and seeds, while adults will eat anything from acorns and berries to insects and small reptiles. Turkey usually feed in early morning and in the afternoon. Wild turkeys like open areas for feeding, mating and habitat. They use forested areas as cover from predators and for roosting in trees at night. A varied habitat of both open and covered area is essential for wild turkey survival. Lack of quality habitat was a problem in the past, but with the passing of the Pittman-Robertson Act in 1937, an excise tax on sporting arms and ammunition, wildlife restoration programs now have money to use to restore wild turkey and wild turkey habitat. And with the invention of the rocket net, wildlife agencies and the NWTF can trap and transfer turkey populations to areas of suitable habitat.

Kansas Hunting Outfitters and Guides Duck Facts

Kansas is located in the middle of the Central Flyway and when water conditions are good, large numbers of duck and geese will stop to rest and feed here. Kansas Hunting Outfitters and Guides Goose Facts

Kansas's huge grain fields are home to millions of migrating goose in the fall and spring. The Kansas hunt provide you with the best opportunity for both species and has very liberal bag limits. Many clients come with us to shoot white front goosse in the central flyway of Kansas. Canada goose are diurnal, meaning that they are active during the day. They spend much of their day grazing and foraging for food either on land or in the water. Canada goose are highly social birds. While nesting, a pair will be somewhat solitary though several pairs may use the same area for breeding and raising young. During the breeding season, males may be aggressive towards humans and other animals if they come too close to the nest site or try to approach the goslings. In the fall, large flocks of multiple Canada goose families gather together for the southward migration to the wintering grounds. Both sexes of the greater white fronted goose are brownish gray in coloration. Distinguishing characteristics include a white patch at the base of the pink or orangeish colored bill and dark brown to black blotches on the breast feathers. The snow goose is a medium sized goose which has two color phases.
