Big Sky Anglers is a firm believer that there’s so much more to fly fishing than just catching fish; that it’s called “fishing” and not “catching” for a reason. We believe wholeheartedly that there’s as much joy in watching a solitary brown feed with reckless abandon as there is in trying to get that perfect drift up under the log jam it’s feeding behind.

Colorado Fly Fishing Outfitters and Guides Trout Facts

Rainbow trout are primarily a freshwater fish, while larger ocean-going fish are often referred to as steelhead. Steelheads are often confused as being a separate species, though in truth they are not. Rainbow trout have the typical trout-shape with an adipose fin, and a squarish tail that has black spots throughout. The rainbow trout has 10-12 anal rays and a white mouth and gums. Rainbow trout or steelhead are generally bright silver with a bright pink band. Males develop a hooked jaw known as a "kype" during the spawning season.Rainbow trout are a cold water species that in nature spawn in moving water over gravel or cobble substrate. They generally spawn in colder temperatures, shortly after the ice thaws. Steelhead spawn at different times depending on location, the major periods being summer and winter seasons.

Adult brown trout have a brown or olive-black back, with lighter side colorings and a white belly. Large black spots appear on much of the sides and back, often with lighter borders. Red, yellow, or orange spots with paler borders are also along the sides. Brown trout that swim in large lakes and the ocean lose a lot of their distinctive spots and are a lot more silvery in color. Brown trout are originally from Europe and Asia, but were introduced to North America in the late 1800's. Now they can be found in lakes and streams throughout much of the North American continent, apart from the most southerly state. Brown trout thrive in cooler temperatures in clear rivers and lakes. Temperatures between 50-65° F (10-18° C) are ideal, but they can tolerate temperatures 10 degrees warmer. Brown trout are a shy fish and so prefer a lot of cover, especially in streams and rivers. Overhanging vegetation, rocks, stream debris, banks, and deep pools are just some examples of what brown trout like to hide in.

Cutthroat trout stick primarily to streams and rivers. Even ocean species stay very close to shore so they can use the current of coastal streams to catch their food. Cutthroats tend to always stick near the shoreline when swimming, using the cover of logs and rocks to avoid predation. Cutthroat trout are commonly found in Western United States and BC, Canada. The sea-run subspecies rarely get much farther inland than 100 miles (160 km), ranging all along the Pacific coast from California to BC. Freshwater breeds are found throughout the Pacific Northwest and south in the Great Basin and Rocky Mountains. The most distinguishing characteristic on cutthroat trout is a red-orange streak under the lower jaw, the source for the fish's moniker. It is shaped like most other trout as it has an elongated and slender body, while its colors vary depending on habitat and location: gold, green, and black are all hues that have been recorded with all the different subspecies.

An entry to Colorado in the late 1800s, the brook trout feeds on aquatic and terrestrial insects and will rise to a large range of small lures, baits and flies. Brook trout have white spots on a dark background with tri-colored outlined fins. This prolific trout often becomes overpopulated and can out-compete other trout. They are typically found in higher elevation lakes, beaver dams and streams.

Lake trout, also known as Mackinaw, are the largest trout in North America. Mackinaws have white spots on a dark background with a deep fork in their tail. As the name suggests, the trout are found in mountain lakes and are usually in deeper water. Anglers also enjoy success with this species during the fall and spring in shallower areas and when ice-fishing.
