Travel Adventures-Bonefish Bay Club of South Andros
Jean Chaintreuil
125 Sully's Trail, Suite 1
Pittsford, NY 14534
Ph 585-360-1812

The Bonefish Bay Club of South Andros is located 15 minutes from the South Andros Airport in the southern section of the island and is a short distance from some of the finest bonefishing on the planet. Literally hundreds of square miles of bone-white flats offer guests unlimited opportunities to challenge some of the largest yet most cooperative bonefish anywhere. Each day, guests select to fish nearby creeks or the vast ocean flats of the South and West Coasts. Breakfast is early, dinner is late, and in-between is some of the best fishing imaginable. Regarded as one of the more scenic areas on the island, the South Bight has deeper channels and, as it is closer to the ocean, is home to some of the larger fish in the area. Bonefish are fewer in numbers here, but, with its combination of bone-white flats, turquoise and emerald waters, fishing “The Bight” is a most memorable experience.Just moments from the lodge, Deep Creek quickly opens to a 6-mile wide bay dotted with dozens of small islands, or “cays”. This area is the perfect spot for those wishing a longer day on the flats and, as it is a more protected area, is the place to be if wind is a factor

One of the oldest and most famous lodges in the Bahamas, Andros Island Bonefish Club is a great destination for anglers looking for a classic Bahamian bonefishing experience. If you’re searching for a great first-time Bahamas experience, then keep in mind that Andros’ huge offering of flats, creeks, cayes, mangroves and fertile fishing grounds all together create the largest and arguably the best fishery in the Bahamas for anglers seeking both numbers and size. Andros Island Bonefish Club features air conditioned rooms, private baths, satellite TV, internet, and a great waterside bar. Wade fishing can be found a short walk from the lodge, making it possible to fish on arrival and departure days or after daily guide hours (for those who just can’t seem to get enough!). The lodge can also accommodate up to 40 guests at a time, making this a great destination for larger groups.

One of the nicer overall operations in the Bahamas, Abaco Lodge is the perfect destination for those seeking “just a little more” from a fishing lodge. Strategically located in the highly productive Marls area on the eastern side of Abaco, this high-end lodge offers immediate access to an extensive and well-protected flats system and amazing numbers of bonefish. The main lodge features a well stocked bar, large dining area, satellite TV, and sofas you can literally disappear in. Large picture windows overlook the Marls and the lodge’s dock, and there is a unique outdoor patio with a bar and large sitting area. Adjacent to the main lodge and the patio is a freshwater pool and outdoor fire pit. All guest rooms are single occupancy, each with A/C, a private bathroom, and a large deck overlooking the flats. This is hands down one of the nicest lodges anywhere in the Bahamas.

Perched on Acklins’ highest hilltop, Acklins Island Lodge provides 360 degree views of the open ocean to the west and the Bight of Acklins to the east. This small island is completely surrounded by over 1,500 square of miles of shallow flats that – compared to other destinations – see very little fishing pressure. As a result, this area is home to fantastic numbers of happy, naive bonefish. Because of the size and characteristics of the area flats, wading is the main game on Acklins. Whether you are fishing the oceanside flats for larger bones, or the flats located inside the Bight, you can expect to be wade fishing 85% of the time. The lodge itself consists of five small cottages that together resemble a small village. Since Acklins is located so close to Crooked Island, anglers may also choose to combined these two destinations to create a customized combo trip.

Bimini is the closest island in the Bahamas to Florida and is only 49 nautical miles east of Miami. From the Lucayan Indian word meaning "two islands", and known around the world simply as "Bimini", North and South Bimini, along with their smaller neighboring cays, make up this group of Bahamian islands situated on the edge of the Great Bahama Bank. Being surrounded by deep water makes this one of the most prolific fisheries in the Bahamas. This was one of Ernest Hemmingway's favorite angling destinations and is a location that has been visited and fished by all of the big names in fishing over many decades. Whether you're looking for flats fish, offshore fish, or for quality family time mixed with some casual fishing, the Bimini Big Game Club is a fine option for serious anglers and non-anglers alike. You will find the overall comfort of the resort's setting top-notch.

Crooked Island is one of the least-visited and most productive fisheries in the Bahamas; about as far from Florida as one can get and still be in Bahamian waters. The location of Crooked is important when you consider that weather patterns in this southern area are usually more consistent and warmer than other Bahamian islands, especially throughout the winter months. The expansive lodge grounds at Crooked Island Lodge include a pleasant swimming beach and sea kayaks to tour the coast and visit the historic lighthouse. All of the guest rooms sit at the tip of Pittstown Point, providing easy access to the ocean. The lodge accommodates a maximum of 12 anglers per week, something that the owners believe will ensure the quality of fishing for many years to come. Aside from the fantastic bonefishing, permit and tarpon can be found during most months of the year, and the guides on the island are eager to fish for them.

Since 1958, a veritable who’s who of the fly fishing world has visited Deep Water Cay. A.J. McClane, Gil Drake, Joe Brooks, and numerous others have come to this private island to search for huge bonefish on over 250 square miles of pristine flats. Today, the fishery is as healthy and productive as ever, loaded with bonefish and home to excellent guides, high-end equipment, and one of the nicest lodge layouts in the Bahamas. Accommodations at Deep Water Cay are comfortably relaxed. Individuals or fishing partners typically prefer the cabanas; one-bedroom units with private bathrooms, two beds, A/C, and large porches overlooking the “home” flat. Larger, private homes and cottages are also available for families or groups. Club amenities include a main clubhouse, welcome center, dock and marina area, infinity pool, and a 4000' private airstrip.

A fantastic do-it-yourself trip option, a visit to Mayaguana offers great fishing for large bonefish on one of the most remote and least-visited islands in all of the Bahamas. Mayaguana is the eastern-most island in the Bahamian chain and about as far south as you can go and still be in the Bahamas. There are only 300 people on the entire island, and this is a destination that is truly “out there” with regards to location! A great laid-back atmosphere, friendly people, a high value for the dollar, and a totally unique fishery that is ideally suited for experienced anglers seeking big bones and something different. Anglers stay in a small, local hotel, and access the islands’ fishing areas each day via rental car and canoe, both of which are available for rent through the hotel. Great opportunities for wading and sightfishing on hard, white-sand flats.
